Our group walks are usually about 6-8 miles. This can be on all types of terrain, including open moorland so participants do need to be reasonably fit and to be equipped with appropriate clothing and footwear.

July 2026
In July we enjoyed a walk from Ivybridge to the lovely country park and lake at Filham and around fields and lanes to little known hamlets like Penquit. Although the sun shone this was before the heatwave really hit so we all enjoyed ourselves safely!

June 2026
Nine members of this intrepid group enjoyed a walk from Mothecombe. It takes more than a bit of rain to stop us and the sun did come out by the time we returned to Mothecombe beach.

April 2026
The Medium Walk Group set off by bus once again this month and it was good to welcome new members to the group. We travelled to Modbury where we enjoyed a figure-of-eight walk around fields and town.

Ably led by Pete Scott, we learnt more about the Civil War battles around Modbury, and enjoyed the natural history with spring flowers and the evidence of oak marble gall wasps. Who knew about them!

Lunch in the sun in Modbury churchyard as the children arrived for their Maundy Thursday service was an added bonus.

March 2026
We had a most enjoyable walk last month. We went by bus to Ernesettle and walked beside the river and through woodlands that many of us had never seen before! More woods and green spaces took us back to Central Park where a heron was sunning himself in the revamped ponds, and the magnolias were in flower.

February 2026
Well, having cancelled our u3a medium walk twice in January due to rain, we got to the first Thursday in February and what happened? The rain came down in biblical amounts just as we arrived at the start of our walk. However, five stalwart walkers turned up and, by the time we had put our boots on very slowly and full waterproofs, it did look a little brighter. So we set off and had a very pleasant walk around Hardwicke Wood and the Saltram estate. The snow-drops were lovely, the mud was bearable, we had our sandwiches in the dry, and just got back to our cars before the heavens opened again.

December 2025
We enjoyed a walk close to home this month. The pictures were taken near Heybrook Bay.

November 2025
We enjoyed a walk from Buckland Monochorum for our November meeting. We went through the grounds of the Garden House where the autumn colours were gorgeous and the very first snowdrops are out! Then on to Milton Combe and Buckland Abbey. Sadly the house and grounds are closed in November which meant a slight change of plan, but we all enjoyed a good walk and good company, and the sun shone. Welcoming some new members to the Group was an added bonus.

October 2025
We had a lovely walk for our October meeting. We caught the bus from Plymouth to Polperro. There were 14 of us so we were pleased the bus was a double decker. We all headed upstairs, The bus was hitting all the low branches along the leafy lanes - we hoped the roof was reinforced.

Interesting journey all round the houses and we even drove into a couple of holiday parks. The journey took about 90 minutes we made good use of our bus passes. When we arrived in Polperro it was disappointing that the public loos were closed. One lot due to vandalism. It made it worse that there was a fast flowing stream by the side of the road!

We started our walk going up the hill to connect with the South West coastal path. Beautiful views of Polperro and the rugged coastline. We saw a kestrel hovering above the cliffs. We stopped at Talland Bay to eat our packed lunch. There were a couple of portaloos in the car park. Phew! We carried on to reach Looe we noticed Looe Island which was owned in the past by two ladies. Now owned by Cornwall Wildlife Trust. We had about an hour before our bus back to Plymouth so we sat outside and had a drink at the Moon Harbour pub.

When we got to the bus stop there were a lot of people waiting. The bus was a single decker. We were standing in the aisle. Luckily a lot of people got off at the holiday park. What a lovely day we had. The weather was overcast to start with but the sun shone in the afternoon.

September 2025
We enjoyed a walk from Ermington. Ably led by Mel we found some tiny lanes, the delightful hamlet at Penquit, and followed footpaths through fields and beside the river. There were a couple of showers and our sandwiches did get a little damp but we all enjoyed ourselves with lots of chat and laughter.

July 2025
Our expedition was from Burrator this month. We visited Crazy Well Pool (the one that legend says is bottomless!) and then followed the Devonport Leat. Here we met a huge digger driven by a young lady who was clearing the leat and keeping the water flowing. We returned by way of the Down Tor stone row and Kistvaens and, egged on by Ken, we climbed to the top of Down Tor to admire the view. From there 23 tors are visible as well as Burrator reservoir!!

June 2025
The group enjoyed a walk from Buckfast Abbey. A lovely stretch beside the River Dart and then up to the viewpoint of Hembury Castle Fort. From there it was mainly downhill back to the Abbey for well earned tea and cakes.

May 2025
The group walked to Cofflete Creek and Traine Woods where the bluebells were lovely. It was a very hot day and we didn’t all finish the walk at the same time as some chose a shorter return - but we are all here to tell the tale!

April 2025
The group enjoyed a stunning walk from East Soar around Bolt Head to Overbecks. It was good to welcome some new members to the group. Many thanks to Paul for leading us.

March 2025
We started our March walk from the site of the old RAF Harrowbeer Airfield at Yelverton, walking east to join the long disused Drake's Leat, following it for some way before walking towards Clearbrook, then taking a circular route back to Yelverton, a distance of over 6 miles

20 walkers all enjoyed the relatively mild and dry early Spring weather. It was an overcast day, but clear, which enabled us to appreciate the distant moorland views

Autumn 2024
The group enjoyed a walk from Loddiswell with paths through woods and beside the river Avon. We even found a large picnic table in the middle of nowhere.
