ABOUT US
Welcome to the University of the Third Age (u3a) — a volunteer-led movement for people no longer in full-time work who want to continue growing, sharing, and making the most of life.
The u3a is not a traditional university. There are no exams, no degrees, and no pressure. Instead, u3a stands for a fresh way of thinking about what we call the “Third Age”: the time after full-time employment when you’re free to explore new interests, meet new people, and give back to your community.

Founded in 1982 in the UK, the u3a movement has over 1,000 local groups and more than 400,000 members. Plymstock & District u3a covers Plymstock, Elburton, Hooe, Oreston, Turnchapel, Staddiscombe, Sherford, Brixton, Down Thomas, Heybrook Bay and Wembury.
Our local u3a is run by its members, for its members, and offers a wide range of educational, creative, and leisure activities. If you’re retired or semi-retired, our u3a is for you. There’s no age limit.
We offer more than just activities. Here’s what you can gain:
- Intellectual stimulation: u3a keeps your mind engaged and your curiosity sparked.
- Creative expression: Discover talents you never knew you had.
- Physical activity: Walking groups, disco dancing or tai chi sessions — whatever your pace, there's something for everyone.
- Social interaction: Whether it's a day trip or a group meeting, u3a is a fantastic way to meet people and build lasting friendships.
- A sense of purpose: Many members lead groups — giving back to others while developing their own skills and confidence.

INTEREST GROUPS: At the heart of our u3a are our interest groups. These are small, friendly sessions led by volunteers who have an enthusiasm for the topic. From art to photography, bridge to local history, walking to learning French – there’s something for everyone. And if you don’t see the group you want, we’ll support you to start your own!
AWAY DAYS: But it’s not just about learning. It’s about enjoying life and making new friends. We run regular outings to local attractions. These are a great way to explore the area and enjoy shared experiences in good company.

GENERAL MEETINGS: One of the highlights of our calendar is the monthly meeting. Held in the Staddy, this is where we come together for an inspiring talk from a guest speaker. There’s always time to chat over refreshments afterwards too. It’s the perfect opportunity to socialise and feel part of the wider u3a family.
Joining our u3a could be the start of a fantastic new chapter in your life. It’s affordable, fulfilling, and most importantly – fun! So why not come along to a general meeting or try out a group, and see what we’re all about? We’d love to meet you.
Learn, laugh, live – that’s the u3a way!
